Los Angeles Riots :: 25 Years

Los Angeles Riots :: 25 Years

I’m not sure where you watched the judgment come down, but I had my eyes pressed against the television as though I was on the assembly line begging to be a part of the final product.

I knew without a shadow of a doubt that a black man was finally going to receive his fair outcome since the entire video of his beating was filmed. I mean, think about it, it was the first time that a beating was fully captured and televised — There was no doubt!

A jury in Ventura, CA (never been here surprisingly) fully acquitted the four Los Angeles Policemen that sparked national outrage and a screeching yell that, “Finally justice will be served!” for all of those who’ve suffered at the hands of cops who believed that somehow, they were gods.

The verdict stunned the nation but, Los Angeles was paralyzed and, a fire by way of riots blazed and burned for five solid days.

It is documented that over 1,000 buildings were burned over this period and that many businesses elected not to re-build as it became a personal defeat on many levels.

The build up and hostility claimed the lives of over 63 individuals which ironically, approximately 75% of those were Black or Latino. This is important to say as these are the two groups that have been disenfranchised and targeted unfairly for many year’s. Understandably, this also has a lot to do with the fact that these two groups were the lead in the riots.

I am a firm believer that the true causes of a riot are not those involved, but society as a whole. When people (human beings) feel devalued, belittled, less than, insignificant, or are made to feel invisible.

Honestly, if we continue to marginalize certain groups or pockets of people, there will be an uprising because they must be heart and, their feelings must be expressed.

So, on this 25th Anniversary of the decision to use one’s personal beliefs to cover wrongs, I challenge you to keep an open mind. Better yet, I challenge (or possibly condemn you) to look inside yourself at your own tendencies to judge based on skin.

Move forward in RIGHTeousness XOXO ♥
